Stourton Caundle Golf Society Monthly Report – February 2023

Our Xmas lunch day has arrived! And what a great day, beautiful, clear blue skies, warm, the course soft and receptive, and 26 golfers all in Xmas jumpers or hats. The new catering team at Folke really turned it on, so thanks to Toni, Nigel, Russell & Caroline for laying a lovely bacon sarny, with a Turkey carvery for lunch. It went down a treat. After the golf, we were joined by another four non-playing members, including our President Terry Taylor for the sit down lunch, followed by presentations, some thank yous from Terry, and then the customary round of joke telling. We played the front 9 holes, as normal on the individual and team competitions. The team comp was then enhanced with a putting competition and quiz. The putting comp entailed each player taking two putts from 3’, 6’, 9’ and 12’. The total putts made were added as a score to the team golf total, and the quiz score, to make our team winners

Our individual winner was Archie Harris, with 21 points. After general improvements to his game, he is taking an extra 3 point cut, on top of the 2 points as the winner, to cut his handicap by 5. There was an additional prize of a block of cheese, one each for the winner and runner up (Simon Price on 19). Thanks to Mutley and Ford Farms.

The big competition on the day was the team prize. On the course, team Semi Lardons won with 43 points. The putting honours were shared between The Wanderers and Team Swings Both Ways with 11 made putts each. The quiz was won by The Wanderers with 18 points. Overall however, it was team The Bells (Quasimodos) with 64 points who have the bragging rights. Congrats to Roger Paull, Dan Leney, Chris Eve & Pete Blundell

The Des Austen challenge was won by team Triple Cripple, for the dubious honour of showing more crutch than the Chippendales. Three of our long standing members have all had operations, providing frankly very lame excuses for not swinging the clubs. Paul Wavish (treasurer), Terry Taylor (President), and Mark Paull (Hanger-on). Paul still turned up sorting all the finances and the putting comp, but more importantly, did the beer run around the course. He might need nobbling every month.
